Valentine’s Day is near and some sellers are noticing an unusual pattern: people are using Bitcoin to buy lingerie. Lila Williams, the founder of Panties.com, was interviewed by Coindesk recently and she affirmed that the company started to accept Bitcoin (BTC) back in March 2017 and that people are still using it.
According to the shop owner, every month she receives a handful of BTC payments as people get a 15% discount when they use crypto to buy. Now that Valentine’s Day is near, people are using it more and more.
Surely, some people will not be keen on spending their valuable Bitcoin on clothing, but some people believe that it has its advantages, especially when you consider the discounts. Coindesk also interviewed Rebecca Migirov, the CEO of Kala, a lingerie brand, and she affirmed that she was seeing a “women-led revolution” in people buying with crypto, which showed that there is demand for that.
Lingerie Industry Could Benefit From Censorship Resistant Platforms
Even if this all may sound like a weird way to spend Bitcoin to some, as most people use it only in the financial world, this is the real reason why BTC was created, to be used as money for whoever wishes to buy something.
Shoppers are also interested in Bitcoin because they often have problems with censorship. If you do not imagine why, you should know that many platforms often mistake lingerie shops with creators of pornographic content, which causes problems for the brands and shops and makes it harder to advertise.
With more Bitcoin-focused marketplaces and platforms getting popular, the shop owners believe that they can finally put this kind of problem behind for once and for all.
Both Williams and Mirigov believe that their advertising potential is often limited, but they also acknowledge that the lingerie industry is not very tech savvy, so they have no choice but to wait until cryptos are really popular than they currently are in order for this dream to become a reality.
Bitcoin Adoption Needs to Be Bigger
One of the main problems that the shop owners see in Bitcoin is that it is not user-friendly for people who are not developers or technology experts. For instance, payments are not refundable, which is a feature for some, but not for them. Williams, for instance, often converts all her BTC to fiat as she is afraid to lose it.
If the technology was friendlier, they could process her own payments and would be more free and autonomous. Cryptos have many advantages. Credit cards often charge more per transaction than crypto and the fees are higher.
Because of all this, the industry is in need of Bitcoin, but it can only really solve this problem when the technology is at the point that people can use it easily to make payments.
