US Homeland Security Awards $200K to Startup Digital Bazaar To Secure Blockchain Tech

A press release from November 14th says the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded Digital Bazaar, a startup based in Virginia, $199,984 to start developing blockchain security technology.

The Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) at DHS already entered Phase 1 of the award, seeing it’s looking to explore the blockchain space and to implement distributed ledger technology (DLT) into its missions.

DHS is Going Paperless

DHS incorporates the US Customs and Border Protection, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Transportation Security Administration, which means it issues, verifies and validates certificates or licenses for citizenship, travel, immigration, and employment. All these verification and validation processes are based on paper exchanges, which means the information they gather is at risk of getting lost, destroyed or forged. For this reason, S&T is trying to figure out how DLT and blockchain technology could help them go paperless and prevent the previously mentioned problems.

The Existing Technology Is Going to Be Updated

Digital Bazaar has a project called Interoperable Enterprise Identity and Credential Life-Cycle Management that is meant to build around the company’s technology, which is already according to web standards, including the Decentralized Identifiers and Verifiable Credentials. The award will be used to enhance the already existing technology with credential lifecycle management options and enterprise workforce. The main objective is to bring this new solution to the market. Anil John, S&T’s Silicon Valley Innovation Program’s Technical Director said that credential issuance technology needs to be integrated with the already existing one.

Not The First DHS Award for Blockchain Tech

It’s not the first time DHS is giving a large award for developing blockchain technology. DHS has given out several awards in various amounts of money to companies to build tech to develop blockchain security solutions like counteracting the counterfeiting and forgery of licenses and certificates. Here are just a few in November alone:
