Zcoin and Blockchain Surface as Solution Towards Thai Authorities Desperately Wanting to Remove Rap Video Criticizing Government

Numerous anti-government movements are determined to get noticed between now and February 2019, when Thailand will hold its much-delayed first general election since the military coup four years ago. One of them managed to get international press lately which is a YouTube video made by a group called Rap Against Dictatorship.

The establishment of Thailand’s military government was frustrated when the music video “Prathet Ku Mee” (translation: “Rap Against Dictatorship”) raked in millions of views. The song criticizes the military’s involvement in Thai politics and various actions by the government. Lyrics that include the lines: “The country that points a gun at your throat/claims to have freedom but no right to choose” shows light on the corruption, lack of elections and suppressing of free speech. These qualities have become symbols of Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha's regime since he seized power in a military coup in 2014.

Alarmed by this and seeing the potential to disrupt the government’s public discourse, the authorities have tried to clamp down on the video. Srivara Ransibrahmanakul, the country’s deputy national police chief warned that the video is illegal, and artists who produced the video have been ordered to certify before Thailand’s National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

To prevent the video from being taken down, anonymous users have placed it on the Zcoin blockchain, which is a privacy coin and an implementation of Zerocoin Protocol.

Poramin Insom, founder of Zcoin said:

“We don’t know who added the IPFS link to their transaction, but this link has been secured by the blockchain and cannot be removed or hidden. Furthermore, by using the Zerocoin protocol, the Zcoin blockchain keeps the link is private and therefore the identities of the uploading parties cannot be known.”

When asked if the Thai government succeeds to take off the video, what Zcoin blockchain will do, he replied:

“The primary technology behind this is Inter Planetary File Systems (IPFS) where the actual file is being stored in a distributed way and replicated throughout the IPFS network. It is the IPFS link that is uploaded on the blockchain as a kind of uncensorable and permanent bookmark. The easiest way to access the file is to go to https://gateway.ipfs.io/ipfs/ and then enter the IPFS link that is embedded into the Zcoin blockchain on block 111089. This will play the video.”

In an attempt to fight fascism, Zcoin is doing their part. This essentially shows the power of decentralized blockchains when it comes to avoiding censorship.
