Zcoin Founder Alerted On State-Backed Attempts to Hack His Google Account
The Zcoin founder, Poramin Insom, has reasons to believe that he is among the victims of the attempts by the Thailand government or any other government to compromise his email account and other web activities.
He shared a screenshot of a security alert sent to him by Google. The notice cautioned him against sanctioned government hackers who are attempting to hack his email account.
Zcoin, a Thailand based project has been making headlines after they created more superior privacy protocols and validated the data sets using advanced mining algorithms like Merkle Tree Proof.
In 2018, the firm was also in the headlines infamously because they went ahead and released a banned video clip, “Rap against Dictatorship”, from a Thai Rap Group. The rap single attacked Thailand authorities and expressed their concerns regarding censorship, corruption, official high-handedness, poor infrastructure, and overall discontent with the current rule.
As expected, the video garnered more than thirty million viewers on YouTube, within fourteen days. This video copy had been included in the Zcoin blockchain through the Interplanetary File System Link (IFSL) by unknown persons. The action led Insom, founder of ZCoin, a Zerocoin protocol- based, to become a person of interest to the authorities.
The Thailand Regime Feels Insulted By Zcoin
According to Poramin, it is believed that the hacking could be due to his firms supposed involvement in the releasing of the clip, which was considered as an insult to the current regime.
Since the 2014 coup, Thailand has been ruled by a military dictatorship and a very controlling royal family. Any acts of dissent by political activists against the current authorities results in prosecution. Thailand has very severe anti-opposition laws and they do not tolerate any form of dissent or anyone who dares to speak up.
The Authorities Remarks
Thai’s deputy national police, Chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul indicated that the rap group may be facing charges for treason.
Rumors also had it that the military government had contacted Google to pull down the video from YouTube.
Obvious facts indicate that most government authorities loathe privacy coins. They consider them as a tool for terrorist financing and money laundering. As such, most victims could be Google users and governments may be trying all means to shut them down and prevent them from proceeding with such activities.
Google created a new security notification in 2012 to caution users against government-backed illegal attempts on their Google accounts. Due to security reasons, Google cannot disclose the details of how they analyze and know that the action is state sponsored.
In their blog post, Google stated that the alert isn’t an indication that a targeted account has already been hijacked. It means that the individual ought to consider taking immediate actions like a modification of the password.
The Zcoin founder, Insom was further advised to join the Advanced Protection Program of Google. The program is aimed at protecting users from the risk of similar attacks and losing critical data.
